Argentinian President formally charged

Buenos Aires - Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was formally charged Friday with the alleged cover-up of Iran's involvement in a 1994 attack on a Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires that claimed the lives of 85 people.

Prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita charged Fernandez de Kirchner in connection with the complaint that Alberto Nisman filed on 14 January. Nisman, who had been investigating the attack on the community centre for 11 years, was found dead in his apartment, under mysterious circumstances, just four days later.

Argentinian Foreign Minister Hector Timerman and two other pro-government politicians were also charged in connection with the alleged cover-up.

The government staunchly denied the allegations. Court officials initially dismissed the need for emergency procedures in the middle of the summer recess and postponed investigations until this month.

Nisman's death came one day before he was expected to testify before parliament about his accusations against the president and her aides.

As president, Fernandez de Kirchner cannot be tried without being stripped of her immunity. She is however set to leave office at the end of this year.
