Earthquake affected areas declared disaster areas

Johannesburg - Several municipalities in the North West have been declared disaster areas following last week's earthquake, the premier's office said on Monday.

The areas affected were the Khuma, Jouberton, Vaal Reefs, Kanana, and Tigane townships in Matlosana local municipality, within Dr Kenneth Kaunda district municipality, said acting spokesperson Bonolo Mohlakoana.

"The declaration also covered Ramotshere Moiloa local municipality in Ngaka Modiri Molema district."

A toll free number, 0800 22 22 70, had been activated for communities to report damage, and for the public or interested organisations to call for donations.

"The Gift of the Givers will be on site tomorrow [Tuesday] in the declared areas to assist victims on the ground," Mohlakoana said.

A 31-year-old man was killed in a mining village near Orkney on Tuesday last week when a 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck the region.

At least 34 miners were injured by the earthquake and more than 600 houses damaged.
