Egypt prepares for 'war' as students return to campus


Cairo - At Cairo University's campus, new, black steel walls have gone up. A private security firm has put up surveillance cameras. Guards have bomb-detection devices. Just outside, heavily armed riot police have permanent positions.

Summer holidays end this weekend, and universities across Egypt are preparing for the return of students with a heavy, pre-emptive security clampdown. The aim is to prevent a resurgence of protests by supporters of Mohammed Morsi, the Islamist president who was removed by the military just over a year ago.

Kenyatta gets triumphant welcome home


Nairobi - Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta received a triumphant welcome on Thursday on his return from The Hague, where he was the first head of state to face charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court.

Kenyatta's lawyers argued at a Wednesday pre-trial hearing that the case should be shelved for lack of evidence. The judges will now consider whether they will drop the case or set a date for a trial.

The Precious and 2 Guns actress filed for divorce from the Blurred Lines and Give It 2 U singer on Friday in Los Angeles, citing "irreconcilable differences".

President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday splashed over N300 million on athletes and their officials who made the country proud at different international competitions in 2014.

Jonathan announced the cash rewards at a reception in honour of the 351 sports men and women at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
