American aid worker stricken with Ebola arrives in U.S. for treatment

An American aid worker infected with the deadly Ebola virus while in Liberia arrived in the United States from West Africa on Saturday and was able to walk from an ambulance into an Atlanta hospital for treatment in a special isolation unit.

A chartered medical aircraft carrying Dr. Kent Brantly touched down at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Georgia, shortly before noon. Brantly was driven by ambulance, with police escort, to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta for treatment in a specially equipped room.

Television news footage showed the ambulance stop outside the hospital, and three people in white biohazard suits stepped gingerly out of the vehicle.

Nokia buys part of Panasonic's network business

Nokia (NOK1V.HE) said on Thursday it agreed to buy part of Panasonic's (6752.T) telecoms network business to boost its operations in Japan, already a key market for the Finnish company.

The deal covers Panasonic's mobile phone wireless base station system business for operators and a related wireless equipment network, Nokia said. It did not disclose the value of the deal, which it expects to close at the start of next year.

Novartis apologizes for not disclosing side-effects of leukemia drugs sooner

The Japanese unit of Novartis AG apologized on Thursday for failing to report to authorities in a timely manner side-effects of its leukemia drugs, in the company's latest scandal in the country.

Novartis Pharma KK, the Swiss drugmaker's wholly owned local subsidiary, said Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare ordered the company to improve its practices after the company did not report side-effects of its Gleevec and Tasigna leukemia treatments until around April.

The ministry said serious side-effects must be reported within a month of discovery. Media reports said such side-effects had been known between April 2013 and January 2014.

The PGA of America could have given Tom Watson, captain of next month’s U.S. Ryder Cup team, a chance to observe up close the two stars, who are in danger of failing to earn automatic spots.

Tape emerges of Clinton discussing bin Laden day before 9/11 attack

 Former President Bill Clinton said he "could have killed" Osama bin Laden in remarks to an audience in Australia the day before al Qaeda's 2001 attacks on the United States, according to an audio tape that emerged this week.

Clinton and officials from his administration have expressed similar sentiments both before and after the Sept. 11 attacks that killed more than 3,000 people but the recording appears to have attracted attention because he was speaking less than 36 hours before al Qaeda hijackers would board four airliners for attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

On the tape Clinton said he declined to pursue one opportunity to kill bin Laden in Afghanistan because it would have risked killing hundreds of civilians.
